Engine lubrication system
All-weather oils have to be applied to BMW engines. Advantages of all-weather oil consists in a possibility of its application without replacement both in the summer and in the winter. A basis of all-weather oil is liquid seasonal oil (for example 15W). By means of so-called thickeners oil is stabilized in a hot state, keeping thus lubricant properties under any service conditions.
The letter "W" in the designation SAE indicates the oil suitable for operation in the winter.
Scope viscosity oil/class
Scopes of the next classes SAE have the general sites that allows existence of short-term deviations of temperature. Mixing of oils of various classes of viscosity is allowed if, for example, it is necessary to add oil viscosity of which does not correspond to a class of viscosity of the oil which is in the engine.
Introduction of lubricant additives of any kind to fuel or oils is not allowed.
Specification of motive oil
Modern motive oils contain the alloying additives significantly improving them properties. These additives increase corrosion resistance of oil and its firmness in relation to oxidation, reduce a shlamoobrazovaniye in an oil case, increase the viscous, clearing and dissolving properties of oil. The clearing and dissolving additives not only reduce formation of rainfall in the engine, but also have at the same time property to dissolve and crush them and other pollution in motive oil and to support them in suspension so that pollution were removed during removal of oil.
Quality of motive oil is characterized by norms of the manufacturer of the car and oil.
Classification of motive oils by the American manufacturers is carried out on the API system (API: American Petroleum Institute). Designation consists of two letters. The first letter indicates a scope: S-Service, is intended for petrol engines; S-Commercial, is intended for diesel engines. The second letter indicates quality in alphabetical order. Oils of the SH API specification for petrol engines and CE for diesel engines have the superior quality.
The European manufacturers of oils have the CCMC specification. They are made taking into account the European production technology of engines. Oils for petrol engines depending on quality have classes from CCMC-G1 to - G5. Diesel oils for cars have the CCMC-PD1 specifications, superior quality of CCMC-PD2.
The European manufacturers in addition specify still the CCMC specification. The CCMC specification considers, in particular, European manufacturing techniques of engines. Oils for petrol engines depending on quality receive the classes G4 and G5. Diesel motive oils for cars are available in the CCMC-PD1 specifications and in the specification more quality CCMC-PD2.
The European commission of CCMC was replaced with "ACEA" (Association des Constructeurs Europeems die l’Automobile) which continues to develop test methods and classification of quality. Oils for petrol engines of cars depending on quality have classes from ACEA A1-96 to A3-96. Oils for diesel engines have classes from B1-96 to B3-96.
Consumption of oil of the internal combustion engine its consumption owing to combustion process is considered. The consumption of oil should not be confused to its leaks arising owing to leakage of the pallet of a case, cover of a head of cylinders etc.
The normal consumption of oil is a consequence of combustion of some of its quantity in cylinders, losses together with the fulfilled gases and products of friction. Besides, oil is spent owing to high temperatures and pressure arising in the course of combustion. Service conditions of the car and admissions of production of separate details also exert impact on an oil consumption. Under normal conditions operation the consumption of oil is so insignificant that between planned intervals of replacement of oil only its insignificant addition is required. The normal consumption of oil makes 1.5/1000 of km.
Oil needs to be added if the mark "Nachfull" is reached (amount of the added oil in this case makes 1 l).
