Removal and installation of a head of cylinders

Models 520i, 523i, 528i (M52 engine)

Signs of damage of sealing laying of a head of cylinders are:
   Loss of power.
   b) Leak of cooling liquid. White clouds in exhaust gases at the heated-up engine.
   c) Oil leak.
   d) Availability of cooling liquid in motive oil. Level of oil does not decrease, and increases. Gray color of motive oil, availability of foam on the index of level of oil, decrease in viscosity of oil.
   e) Availability of motive oil in cooling liquid.

In this case after repair it is necessary to remove a radiator and to wash out its special cleaner BMW to remove the oil remains from a radiator.

   f) Foaming of cooling liquid.
   g) Lack of a compression in two next cylinders.

Removal

The head of cylinders is removed only after cooling of the engine. The inlet pipeline and a final collector are not disconnected.

Some works are in more detail described in the Section Removal and installation of the engine. It is recommended to study contents of the specified Section in more detail.


 REMOVAL

1. Disconnect a weight cable from the rechargeable battery. The battery is in a luggage carrier behind the right side facing.

At a detachment of the battery the memories given in electronic blocks, for example, memories of malfunctions of the engine are erased. Address recommendations of the Section Removal and installation of the rechargeable battery.

2. Lift and install the car on supports.
3. Turn off bolts of fastening and remove a reception pipe from a final collector, address the Section Removal and installation of system of release.
4. Merge cooling liquid, address appropriate section cooling system liquid Replacement. Check of frost resistance of a cooler. Visual check of the cooling system.
5. Merge cooling liquid from the engine. For this purpose turn out a stopper sideways at the block of cylinders under a final collector. After removal of liquid at once screw and tighten a stopper.
6. Remove spark plugs, address the Section Check and replacement of spark plugs.
7. Remove the inlet pipeline, address the Section Removal and installation of the inlet pipeline.

8. Rasstykuyte shtekerny connection. At the same time press a wire stopper. Address an accompanying illustration.

9. Turn off bolts of fastening and uncover a head of cylinders. At the same time pay attention to an arrangement of rubber linings that at assembly to establish them on former places. Address an accompanying illustration.

10. Remove the mine of cables from the thermostat case. For this purpose sideways open clips. Address an accompanying illustration.

11. Uncover the camshaft of inlet valves. Address an accompanying illustration.

12. Disconnect load-lifting brackets of the engine. At the same time pay attention to the provision of a cable (1) for the subsequent assembly. Address an accompanying illustration.

13. Install the piston of the first cylinder in VMT. At the same time cams of camshafts of inlet and final valves of the first cylinder have to look upward. It is possible to turn the engine as follows:
   Include the 5th transfer and move the car on the flat platform.
   b) A head for the central bolt of fastening of a pulley of a bent shaft in the direction of rotation (RKPP is in neutral situation).

14. Record a bent shaft in VMT the tool 11 2 300 or any suitable mandrel. For this purpose insert a mandrel through an opening in the block of cylinders into an opening in a flywheel, having taken out previously a stopper. Address an accompanying illustration.

15. Disconnect an oil pipeline at the adjusting VANOS element and close an opening a pure stopper. Address an accompanying illustration.

16. Rasstykuyte shtekerny connection at the electromagnetic valve of the adjusting VANOS element.

17. Turn out a hairpin. Address an accompanying illustration.

18. Fix camshafts the tool shown on an illustration in the provision of VMT of the piston of the first cylinder. If it is necessary, camshafts it is possible to turn 24 mm for a hexagon. Address an accompanying illustration.

Do not damage at the same time the case of camshafts. If necessary to a wrench plane soshlifuyta that it became thinner.

19. If the camshaft is turned so that valves of the 1st and 6th cylinders begin to move, turn a bent shaft on a corner 30 ° from VMT in the direction of rotation of the engine and only after that turn the camshaft. Thus, contact of valves with pistons is excluded. Address an accompanying illustration.

20. Turn out traffic jams from an adjusting element.

21. Weaken bolts at an asterisk of the camshaft of final valves. Address an accompanying illustration.

22. Press on top a natyazhitel of a chain and record him, having inserted the corresponding BMW tool in this situation. Address an accompanying illustration.

23. Turn off nuts and uncover. Address an accompanying illustration.

24. Remove the adjusting VANOS element and turn at the same time asterisks against the stop to the right. If asterisks by hand are not turned, then existence of a dish-shaped spring is the reason. In this case it is necessary to use the special BMW tool which use is shown on an illustration. Address an accompanying illustration.

25. Disconnect the sensor of recognition of the cylinder. Rasstykuyte shtekerny connection of the sensor. Address an accompanying illustration.

26. Turn off fastening bolts on an asterisk of the camshaft of inlet valves. Remove a persistent washer from an asterisk. Address an accompanying illustration.

27. Remove both asterisks with a chain from camshafts.

28. Disconnect the top support of a natyazhitel of a chain. Address an accompanying illustration.

29. Turn out a natyazhitel at a head of cylinders.

Hold a natyazhitel, he is pressed by effort of a spring. Address an accompanying illustration.

30. Remove a chain guide. Then remove an asterisk from the camshaft of final valves.

Fix a chain by a wire from slipping down. Address an accompanying illustration.

31. Turn off two bolts (arrows on an accompanying illustration).

32. Turn off bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders outside inside for several receptions. For this purpose HAZET 2925 need Torx key, for example, or BMW 11 2 250.

Do not put a head of cylinders after removal on a sealing surface. At the same time it is possible to damage valves which are completely open. Establish a head of cylinders on two wooden linings.


 INSTALLATION

1. Remove the sealant remains with solvent and a shaber from a firm tree. You watch that the remains of sealant did not get to openings. Close openings rags.
2. Carefully blow openings under bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders compressed air, having removed oil and the remains of sealant, or clear them the rag which is wrapped up on the screw-driver.

The oil congestion in deaf openings since it can affect the correct assessment of the moment of an inhaling of bolts is not allowed. Besides, it can lead to a rupture of the block of cylinders.

3. Check adjusting plugs for existence of damages and correctness of landing. They serve for centering of a head of cylinders. Address an accompanying illustration.

4. Check a head of cylinders for existence of cracks, working surface of cylinders on existence of zadir.
5. Check the planes of a head and the block of cylinders a steel ruler in the longitudinal and cross direction. In need of the plane are processed (work HUNDRED). The maximum deviation from planeness makes 0.03 mm. Value of the required height of a head of cylinders is given in Specifications.

Depending on height of a head of cylinders after its machining sealing laying of original thickness is established or is 0.3 mm thicker. Increase in thickness of laying excludes reduction of height of the combustion chamber.

6. Crossing points at a cover of the case of asterisks of camshafts are coated with Drei Bond 1209 sealant.
7. Sealing laying of a head of cylinders needs to be replaced with new always. Establish new laying so that not to block openings.
8. Camshafts have to be fixed by the BMW tool.
9. Establish a head of cylinders by means of the assistant. Do not warp it, otherwise it is possible to damage new laying.

It is necessary to apply surely new bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders. Before installation bolts have to be oiled. At serial heads of cylinders of a washer of bolts are not lost since they are fullered. At installation of a new head of cylinders establish new washers, not raschekanivy them

10. Bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders drag on in three steps. Every time in the sequence from 1 to 14. Address an accompanying illustration. Efforts of tightening are given in Specifications.

The inhaling of bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders needs to be carried out with special care. Before an inhaling of bolts the dynamometer key needs to be checked for accuracy. Besides, angular washer, for example, of HAZET 6690 is necessary for an inhaling of bolts. If there is no such washer, establish a key, apply a line of a measuring square to the handle of a key and note chalk the corresponding corner. After that turn a key at one time on noted corner.

11. Fix bolts of fastening of a cover of the case of driving asterisks. (Address an accompanying illustration).

12. Establish an asterisk on a camshaft flange. The arrow on an asterisk has to specify upward. Carving openings have to is on the left side of oval openings since at installation of a natyazhitel the asterisk turns on the left. Address an accompanying illustration.

13. Establish a guide of a chain and the top natyazhitel.

14. Screw the special BMW 11 4 220 tool in a carving opening of a natyazhitel of a chain. Address an accompanying illustration.
This tool presses a chain and makes its preliminary tension to provide installation of asterisks of camshafts in the average provision of oval openings. In the presence of some experience such tool can be manufactured independently. Without use of the specified tool the correct installation of a chain is impossible.

15. Install a persistent washer on the camshaft of inlet valves and fix by the moment 20 Nanometers. Address an accompanying illustration.

16. Put on the top chain together with asterisks, monitoring the correct provision. The flat party of an asterisk has to point outside, fillet to the camshaft. Address an accompanying illustration.

17. The arrow on an asterisk of the camshaft of final valves shows upward. Bolts of fastening have to be in the middle of oval openings. Address an accompanying illustration.

18. Execution without dish-shaped springs: Establish a persistent washer on an asterisk of the camshaft of inlet valves and fix by its moment 20 Nanometers. Address an accompanying illustration.

19. Execution with dish-shaped springs:
Install a persistent washer (thickness about 2 mm) on the camshaft of inlet valves. Then establish a dish-shaped spring (2). You monitor the provision of a dish-shaped spring: big diameter has to specify in the direction of the camshaft. Then establish a persistent washer (thickness about 4 mm). Establish three nuts, having greased a carving with means for fixing of threaded connections of Loctite 270, and fix by the moment 20 Nanometers.

20. Screw bolts of fastening of an asterisk of the camshaft of final valves, without tightening them.

21. Before installation of the adjusting VANOS element turn both asterisks in oval openings against the stop to the right. Address an accompanying illustration.

22. Before installation press against the stop the gear roller VANOS (1) in the direction of the case (2). Address an accompanying illustration.

23. Pay attention to adjusting plugs (1). Fill corners of sealing surfaces between a head of cylinders and the VANOS block with Drei Bond 1209 sealant. Address an accompanying illustration.

24. Establish the adjusting VANOS element. At the same time the gear roller is fixed in an asterisk. For a possibility of fixing turn an asterisk by hand or in case of execution with a dish-shaped spring by means of the auxiliary tool counterclockwise.

The first suitable tooth has to be recorded. Otherwise adjustment of the mechanism of distribution is broken. Address an accompanying illustration.

25. Displace the VANOS block in the direction of a head of cylinders. At the same time the asterisk is turned owing to a tooth inclination to the left. Support this movement, turning an asterisk a hand.

26. Wrap bolts of fastening of the adjusting VANOS block. Address an accompanying illustration.

27. Weaken the top natyazhitel, having removed the tool 11 3 292, address the subsection "Removal".

28. Create a preliminary tension, having turned a bolt of a natyazhitel by means of the special tool the moment of 1.3 Nanometers. Address an accompanying illustration.

29. Enshrine an asterisk of the camshaft of final valves in this provision by the moment of 20 Nanometers in two steps evenly cross-wise.
Remove the special tool for fixing of the camshaft and a preliminary tension of a chain.

Auto repair shops of BMW check the VANOS block by means of the special tool. If after assembly the car functions faultlessly, then check can be not made at once, and to execute it later.

30. Fix an oil pipeline at the VANOS block with new consolidations. Join shtekerny connection.

31. Screw the lower natyazhitel of a chain with a new sealing ring and fix by the moment 35 Nanometers. You monitor the correct provision of a natyazhitel. The groove on the piston has to settle down perpendicularly to the tension tire. Address an accompanying illustration.

32. Establish a cover of the case of driving asterisks with new laying. At the same time bolts of fastening of M6 drag on the moment of 10 Nanometers, M8 the moment of 22 Nanometers. Do not forget about adjusting plugs at external bolts.
33. Screw three fingers of a cover of a head of cylinders.

34. Establish a cover of a head of cylinders. Replace the damaged laying. When laying laying pay special attention to its correct situation in grooves of an end face of a head of cylinders. Evenly press out a cover of a head of cylinders the moment of 10 Nanometers. Address an accompanying illustration.

35. Insert the sensor of recognition of the cylinder and fix it. At damage of a sealing ring replace it.
36. Insert spark plugs, address the Section Check and replacement of spark plugs.
37. Install the inlet pipeline, address the Section Removal and installation of the inlet pipeline.
38. Attach electric wires, address the subsection "Removal".
Fix a reception pipe on a final collector.

Before launch of the engine take out a mandrel of provision of VMT at a flywheel

39. Fill system with cooling liquid, address the Section Cooling System Liquid Replacement. Check of frost resistance of a cooler. Visual check of the cooling system.
40. Check oil level in the engine. If necessary add oil. If the head of cylinders was removed owing to defect of sealing laying, it is recommended to replace previously oil, including oil in the filter since in motive oil can there is a cooling liquid.

Models 525tds (M51 engine)

Signs of defective laying of a head of cylinders are given above.

 REMOVAL

1. Disconnect a weight cable from the rechargeable battery. The battery is in a luggage carrier behind the right side facing.

At a detachment of the battery the memories given in electronic blocks, for example, memories of malfunctions of the engine are erased. Address recommendations of the Section Removal and installation of the rechargeable battery.

2. Merge cooling liquid and utilize it, address the Section Cooling System Liquid Replacement. Check of frost resistance of a cooler. Visual check of the cooling system.
3. Remove a hose from the thermostat case, previously having opened a collar.
4. Merge cooling liquid from the engine. For this purpose turn out a stopper sideways at the block of cylinders under a final collector. After removal of liquid at once wrap a stopper.
5. Disconnect the fan with the viscous coupling (left carving), address the Section Removal and installation of the fan and coupling of the fan.

6. Uncover the engine at the inlet pipeline. Address an accompanying illustration.

7. Remove holders of the inlet pipeline. Address an accompanying illustration.

8. Remove the following hoses from the holder of a head of cylinders: 1 - a vacuum hose of the amplifier of a brake, 2 - a hose of cooling liquid of a heater, 3 - a fuel hose to the injection pump. Address an accompanying illustration.

9. Disconnect a vacuum hose at the soaking-up channel (at the valve of recirculation of the fulfilled gases).
10. Disconnect electric wires of the sensor of temperature at the inlet pipeline, having pressed a wire clip.

11. Turn off bolts of fastening of the pipeline of recirculation of the fulfilled gases at the inlet pipeline. Open a collar and disconnect an air hose at the inlet pipeline. Address an accompanying illustration.

12. Turn off bolts of fastening and remove the inlet pipeline. Address an accompanying illustration.

13. Turn off cap nuts of pipelines of injection from nozzles and the fuel pump. The special key of BMW or HAZET No. 4550 is for this purpose necessary. Close openings technological caps. Address an accompanying illustration.


14. Disconnect contacts at heat candles. Address an accompanying illustration.

15. Rasstykuyte shtekerny connection of the sensor of the beginning of injection at a nozzle.

16. Disconnect the pipeline of recirculation of the fulfilled gases at a final collector and at the holder and remove. Address an accompanying illustration.

17. Take off maple a belt, address the Section Removal, installation and a tension of a maple belt.

18. Turn off bolts of fastening and remove a turbocompressor from a reception pipe of system of release. Address an accompanying illustration.

19. Evenly turn off all bolts of fastening of a cover of a head of cylinders at first on 1/2 turns, and then completely. Uncover. Address an accompanying illustration.

20. Disconnect a hydraulic natyazhitel of a maple belt and remove a damper.

The removed natyazhitel you store only in working situation, i.e. vertically. Otherwise further there can be malfunctions in its work. Address an accompanying illustration.

21. Turn out two bolts of fastening and remove the vacuum pump. The bolt (2) at the same time serves as the holder of the directing chain. The bolt has to be condensed with sealant. After an otvorachivaniye the bolt has to be either is replaced with new or greased with sealant. Address an accompanying illustration.

22. Install the piston of the first cylinder in VMT. At the same time cams of camshafts of inlet and final valves of the first cylinder have to look upward. It is possible to turn the engine as follows:
   Include the 5th transfer and move the car on the flat platform.
   b) A head for the central bolt of fastening of a pulley of a bent shaft in the direction of rotation (RKPP is in neutral situation).

23. Record a bent shaft in VMT the tool 11 2 300 or any suitable mandrel. For this purpose insert a mandrel through an opening in the block of cylinders into an opening in a flywheel, having taken out previously a stopper. Address an accompanying illustration.

Cranked and distributive shaft after removal of a head of cylinders cannot be turned.

24. Fix the camshaft the BMW tool. It is possible to do without tool, but at an otvorachivaniye of fastening of an asterisk of the camshaft it is necessary to hold from a provorachivaniye a hexagon on 27 mm. Address an accompanying illustration.

25. Install the lever on a chain guide and press on a natyazhitel. Address an accompanying illustration.

26. Turn out a stopper and record a natyazhitel in the pressed situation the corresponding mandrel. Address an accompanying illustration.

27. Turn off bolts of fastening of an asterisk of the camshaft and remove it, holding a shaft for a hexagon. For prevention of sliding of a chain fix it by a wire down.

28. Turn off a pin of fastening of the tire at a head of cylinders and remove with a sealing ring. Address an accompanying illustration.

29. Turn off a pin of fastening of the directing chain and remove with a sealing ring. Address an accompanying illustration.

30. Turn off hairpins of fastening of a cover of driving asterisks. Address an accompanying illustration.

31. Turn off a bolt (shooter on an accompanying illustration) and remove a drainage hose from a nozzle.

32. Turn off bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders in the sequence with 14 on 1 on 1/2 turns. Then in the same sequence turn off them. The corresponding head of Torx of the E12 size is necessary for a reversing of bolts. Address an accompanying illustration.

33. Remove a head of cylinders.

Do not put a head of cylinders after removal on a sealing surface. At the same time it is possible to damage valves which are completely open. Establish a head of cylinders on two wooden linings.


 INSTALLATION

1. Before installation clear a head and the block of cylinders the corresponding shaber of the sealant remains. You watch that sealant did not get to openings. Close openings a rag.
2. Check a steel line of the plane of a head and the block of cylinders in the longitudinal and cross direction.

It is not necessary to process a head of cylinders mechanically. In the presence of damages the head is replaced.

3. Check correctness of position of adjusting plugs (an arrow on an accompanying illustration). They serve for centering of laying and a head of cylinders.

4. Carefully blow openings under bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders compressed air, having removed oil and the remains of sealant, or clear them the rag which is wrapped up on the screw-driver.

5. Sealing laying of a head of cylinders and bolts of fastening are surely replaced with new.

5. Put new sealing laying without additional sealant so that not to block openings. Laying depending on its thickness is marked by various number of openings. New laying has to have the same number of openings, as well as old. Address an accompanying illustration.

7. If it is not clear what laying has to be established, for example, after repair of the block of cylinders, it is necessary to measure by the indicator excess of the piston. Laying is chosen according to the greatest excess of one of six pistons. For this purpose install the indicator in a point (A) and in different directions determine by easy turns of a bent shaft the greatest excess. After that repeat measurement in a point (In). Average value from measurements (A) and (In) represents excess of the piston. The specified measurements are taken in all six points.

8. From the received values average value is calculated. For this purpose all excesses develop and divided into six. If value less than 0.76 mm as a result turns out, then it is necessary to establish laying with two openings. At value more than 0.76 mm laying with three openings is established.

If one or several cylinders have excess of the piston more than 0.81 mm, it is necessary to establish laying with three openings.

9. Only for execution with an arm for the injection pump: Sealing laying from profile rubber is replaced with new. The groove for laying needs to be cleared. In the ends of grooves apply Drei Bond 1209 sealant.

10. Condense grooves between a cover of a box of driving asterisks and a head of cylinders with Drei Bond 1209 sealant. Address an accompanying illustration.

11. Establish heads of cylinders by means of the assistant. Do not warp a head since at the same time it is possible to damage laying.

Cranked and camshafts after removal it is not necessary to turn since open valves can rest against the piston. If necessary turn shaft before installation in the necessary situation, address the subsection "Removal". Address an accompanying illustration. On an illustration the asterisk of the drive of the fuel pump of high pressure of the diesel engine is shown. Marking has to look up.

12. Slightly grease new bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders and wrap them by hand.

The inhaling of bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders needs to be carried out with special care. Before an inhaling of bolts it is necessary to check a dynamometer key for accuracy. Besides, inhaling of bolts requires an angular washer, for example, of HAZET 6690. It is possible to establish a dynamometer key along the block of cylinders and to note chalk a corner by means of a goniometer on a head of cylinders.

13. Bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders drag on in six inclusion in the sequences with 1 on 14. Address an illustration 6.107. Efforts are given in Specifications.
14. Establish a cover of a box of driving asterisks, tighten its bolts of fastening the moment of 10 Nanometers.
15. Tighten bolts near an injector and put on an oil drainage hose near an injector, address the subsection "Removal".
16. Screw two pins of the tension tire and the directing chain with new sealing rings.
17. Fix an asterisk with a chain on distributive to a shaft, without tightening bolts.

Adjacent surfaces have to be fat-free and cleared.

18. Take out from a natyazhitel a mandrel so that the chain stretched. Screw a stopper in an opening.

19. In case the camshaft is fixed by the adjusting BMW template: The template is provided for adjustment of a chain at a car run to 20 000 km. At a bigger run on the party of inlet valves of a head of cylinders laying (probe) by thickness And = 4.5 mm is put. If the template is not applied, turn the camshaft on a corner 2 ° to the left and hold it in this situation for a hexagon on 27 mm. Address an accompanying illustration.

20. Enshrine an asterisk of the camshaft in this provision in two steps by the effort presented in Specifications (address an accompanying illustration).

Remove a mandrel at a flywheel of a bent shaft and a stopper at the camshaft. Turn the engine several times by hand and check the distribution moments. Address an accompanying illustration.

21. Insert the vacuum pump with a new sealing ring. The lead has to enter a groove on a camshaft asterisk. Address an accompanying illustration.

Bolt Torx on an asterisk of the camshaft has an opening for lubricant of the vacuum pump. If necessary clear an opening.

22. Tighten two bolts of fastening of the vacuum pump the moment of 20 Nanometers. Either replace an internal bolt with new or grease before installation by liquid sealant since he demands consolidation.
23. Insert a damper and the holder of a natyazhitel of a chain and fix them.
24. Put on maple a belt, address the Section Removal, installation and a tension of a maple belt.
25. Check sealing laying of a cover of a head of cylinders, if necessary replace it.

26. Establish a cover of a head of cylinders and tighten fastening bolts from within outside the moment of 15 Nanometers. You monitor the correct provision of laying at a groove. Address an accompanying illustration.

27. Fix a turbocompressor with new laying and the new self-stopped nuts on a final collector. Previously grease bolts with copper (high-temperature) paste. Tighten all bolts the moment of 45 Nanometers.
28. Establish accessions of candles of an incandescence.
29. Join shtekerny connection of the sensor of the beginning of injection at a nozzle.

30. Insert pipelines of nozzles, without bending them. Tighten cap nuts a special key the moment of 20 Nanometers.

31. Replace laying of the inlet pipeline with new. After that install the inlet pipeline. Tighten bolts of fastening cross-wise the moment of 25 Nanometers.
32. Fix bolts of a support of the inlet pipeline.
33. Lay or put on all hoses in the holder of the inlet pipeline, address the subsection "Removal".
34. Fix a pipe of recirculation of the fulfilled gases at a final collector, holder and the inlet pipeline.
35. Connect electric wires.
36. Attach a weight cable to the rechargeable battery. Establish hours. Program stations of the radio receiver.
37. Put on a hose of cooling liquid the thermostat case, fix it by a collar.
